Another one for the Asylum

Firstly: I suppose the following contains SPOILERS if you haven't seen the "Asylum of the Daleks" episode of Doctor Who yet...

So, SPOILER WARNING!

...

Okay, so the Daleks can't remember the Doctor now, right? Which is all well and good and exciting, but it got me worrying about something, and... look, just read the comic I made about it.

Bow Tie Appreciation Society

Doctor 11 composite 1 600PX

I have recently been falling hopelessly, utterly in love with Doctor Who all over again - and let's face it, I was pretty keen to start with, and thought I'd have a go at drawing the new chap. So, y'know, here he is.

Doctor 11 composite 2 600px

I took the opportunity to draw a few Patrick Troughtons as well, because - well, because I totally love Patrick Troughton and wanted to draw him. Who wouldn't? Look at that face!

Doctor 2 composite 1 600px

While drawing the above it dawned on me that pretty much my dream job - apart from doing Mo-Bot High, naturally - would be to illustrate a graphic novel adaptation of one of the lost Patrick Troughton Doctor Who stories. Maybe Evil of the Daleks? All the art in grayscale, obviously. Come on, that would be amazing, right?

Anyway, I leave you with... team-up!

Watching Doctor Who

FP New Who Strip 550px

My nerdiness for Doctor Who will be familiar to followers of this blog, which may explain why Matt Badham asked me to contribute a short review of the first episode of the new series for a quick round-up of reactions on the Forbidden Planet blog. I was delighted to contribute, but thought I'd probably be better off drawing something as, y'know, that's sort of my thing. The way it all worked out over Easter I only had a very short window to come up with an idea and draw something immediately after seeing the episode in question, so the strip above is what you get.

While I'm here, a quick update on the A-Z posters! They are very nearly all sold out again, and so I'm going to be taking them off sale again today. I won't be printing any more as, quite frankly, the time it takes to pack and send them all out is kind of killing me. Once I've closed the books and done the sums and taken the cheque for the the final tally to SSNAP I will blog the details here!

Drawing the Doctor

Loyal readers of this blog will be all too familiar by now with my nerdiness for Doctor Who, and so will understand how excited I was recently when I got the chance to provide some illustrations for the Doctor Who Storybook 2010 (available now from all good bookshops). I've just updated my website with a couple of them, why not go and have a look? They accompanied the story Bennelong Point by Keith Temple, in which Doctor Who goes to Australia, dodges evil alien Kangaroos and generally has a much more interesting time crossing the Nullarbor on the Indian Pacific railway than I ever did. (3 days - 3 DAYS - of blank featureless desert views, bad food, and not an evil alien Kangaroo as far as the eye could see.)

But I digress. One thing I've certainly learned from doing these illustrations is that David Tennant is a surprisingly difficult fellow to draw. (And indeed, looking back over some previous blog posts in preparing this one, just how much some of my attempts to do so have sucked.) I'm not beating myself up here - if you look at a lot of illustrations / comics art of the chap (and I have) you'll see that it's all too easy to fall into the trap of either giving him a blandly generic 'handsome' face, or alternately just looking over-referenced to the point where you wonder why they didn't just use a photo.

It's a hard balancing act to pull off, and by no means do I mean to imply that I think I got it right here. The best example, for my money, is the work of Rob Davis, who regularly draws stuff for Doctor Who Magazine and who provided, along with Ian Culbard, the absolutely gorgeous comic strip for the 2010 storybook. One of his recent strips in particular, 'The Deep Hereafter' really struck me with how he managed to draw a David Tennant Doctor who looked unmistakeably like David Tennant, but with an admirably fluid and lively cartooning style that works perfectly in comics. And not only that, but made it look easy.

Which is, you know, kind of what you want.

New Doctor Who

The BBC put out a first picture of Doctor-Who-elect Matt Smith in his costume this morning, and I felt moved to have a quick go at drawing the guy.

(Background TARDIS shamelessly recycled from those sample pages I did a while back...)

As longtime readers of this blog will know, I am a bit of a Doctor Who nerd, and it is an outstanding ambition of mine to work on some Doctor Who comics. (I recently came close, doing some illustrations for the Doctor Who Storybook 2010 - coming out soon). One thing I have learned in this ongoing / occasional quest is that nailing likenesses is really hard, so... well, I thought it couldn't hurt to get started early. More attempts to follow, doubtless.

Random Sketchbook Scan #0006: The Doctor!

#0006: David Tennant face studies, 2008

Did I mention I am a bit of a nerd for Doctor Who?

Going to get that dude's face right one of these days, swear to god.

Doctor Who and the Dinosaur Pirates

I was reading a collection of Grant Morrison's Doctor Who comics the other day, which I'd highly recommend. It's published by IDW, reprinted from Doctor Who Magazine in the 80's, and is chock-full of crazy Morrison ideas and absolutely beautiful John Ridgway art, superbly recoloured. Anyway, as I was happily reliving all sorts of pleasant childhood memories, it occurred to me that drawing Doctor Who comics would be about as much fun as a chap could have.

As such, I prepared the following sample pages, which I reproduce here for your enjoyment, and in the vague hope that someone somewhere on the internet will see them and give me a job.

Anyway, they were awfully fun to do.

Credit where it's due: the dino-ships are a straight lift from The Pirates of Pangaea, a project I'm working on with my writerly friend Dan Hartwell, about which I'm sure I'll post lots more here anon.

Doctor Doodles

Knock knock, Who's there? Doctor, etc...

A few warm-up / practise sketches of the good Doctor, for no better reason than that I am a big nerd and felt like drawing Doctor Who. Isn't that enough?
